Independence Month Series: October 5, 1960

Thirteen days to his retirement from the Northern Region, Sir Algernon Brown, the 60 year old Chief Justice of the Northern Region was found dead in his bedroom with a revolver by his side. Suicide was suspected.

The leader of the opposition in the Federal Parliament, Chief Obafemi Awolowo issued the Action Group (AG) party statement in reply to the Prime Minister’s Criticism of the opposition’s refusal to join the government’s delegation to the UN general assembly at a press conference on this day.

The international Commission of Jurists announced that it plans to hold an African conference on the rule of law – the first of its kind to be held in Africa – in January 1961, in Lagos.
