Independence Month Series: October 6, 1960

Concerning Nigeria’s Independence a meeting of the Security Council was called to hear the application of Nigeria for membership of the United Nations.

On this day, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Senate president and the Governor-General-designate of Nigeria presented a mace to the Eastern House of Chiefs at a special meeting of the house and staffs of the office were also presented to the first class chiefs of the House by the Eastern Premier, Dr M.I. Okpara.

A petition by Mr Samuel A. Onitiri, who, with Mr Theophilus O. Benson, the Nigerian Minister of Information, were candidates for the Lagos North Constituency in the federal election of December 12, 1959, was dismissed by the Judicial committee of the Privy Council (Until October 1963 when Nigeria became a republic, Nigerian could still make petitions to that August body).
